Your weigh scale needs to be in peak performance year round.
Otherwise, you lose yourself and truck drivers money on a daily basis. The best route to keep these machines at the top of their game is to perform daily maintenance as an operator.
Daily Maintenace to Perform
Spot Check Weighing Sessions
Periodically throughout the day, it’s a good idea to spot-check a few sessions for vehicles using the station. First, ensure the scale is always reading zero before beginning a session. Otherwise, there could be weight being recognized that isn’t there, or the scale needs new calibration.
Keeping the Area Clear of Debris
Whenever a truck’s load leaves behind blockage on the scale, it’s going to impact every other vehicle that follows it. Take this into consideration with how the scale is operated, since some drivers won’t even notice they lost cargo.
Weekly and Monthly Maintenance
Calibration
Calibration is one of the top causes that keep weighing stations running at their best. If these calibration sessions are missed, then there’s a stronger likelihood that the unit is going to misread more often and have weak accuracy.
Water Damage and Moisture Buildup in a Weigh Scale
Water damage is extremely common for most weighing stations, especially in more extreme climates. Take some time to consider how often it rains and at what frequency you have rain on a weekly basis. Then, you can find the tighter spaces around the station where water can “puddle up,” causing deeper damage to set in. Luckily, even if you just do this once a month, you’ll avoid most rusting damage. Although, if rust damage does set in, it’s hard to shake. Try to catch these issues as early as possible to avoid expensive repairs or even replacement.
Excess Loads
Anytime a load exceeds the limit for the system, you put it at risk of failing. It’s important that you make sure all vehicles are abiding by these limitations on a regular basis. You can’t permanently damage a scale faster than with excess loads.
Cleaning
Cleaning the whole system is best to start at least once every week or two. Then, you can spray down any debris and keep the surface clean. This will lower the risk of weight improperly reading, and also keep the maintenance in-house on your end as much as possible, saving you the added expense. However, do consider the time you lose on a weekly basis if you are doing all the maintenance yourself. While it is important, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to do everything yourself.
Sometimes, letting other professionals handle the calibration, cleaning, and service will leave you to be able to focus on other more pressing matters. Additionally, these come at wallet-friendly prices.
